The lovely Alyse and Hannah has adopted of YoYo (previously GEK) to thier home!
They came over last Friday with some friends and fell instantly in love with YoYo , it was clear from their interactions with YoYo that they will take great care of her.

Big thanks to all the kind ppl that helped spread the word and provided a lot of kind advise and support.

They will be visiting tonight. They sound nice from the emails exchanged and are fully aware of GEKs situation with FIV. They are very interested in her, I hope they will be a good match!

GEK is doing well , she seems to be adjusting to the bathroom. Although she still tries to escape when we open the door, she is also a lot calmer.
She now enjoys to play a lot more, she likes to climb around and chase her little cat toy across the room . She has also been exploring the tiny bathroom on her own. I caught her walking across the bathtub rim as though she is on the high beam.
She is getting much better with the litter box, I got her a slightly bigger aluminum tray and she has been using it ever since. I'm please to say there has been no problem at all.

update on GEK

Due to her FIV+ status, GEK has been living isolated in the bathroom since Saturday.
Like most NYC bathrooms, ours is tiny. It was sufficient for GEK for the past few days, but yesterday GEK was starting to get a bit restless and cries whenever she is left alone in the bathroom. It is heart breaking to hear her cry. So for a short time she was allow to wonder in the apt under supervision , she seems to enjoy that a lot. I think that might have made her want to stay out of the bathroom even more. The only way to distract her crying is with food. Poor thing, I hope she will play more with the toys left for her and find ways to occupy herself.
If anyone has any advise do share.
And if you know anyone that would be a great match for this kitten please don't hesitate to contact us

GEK on New York shitty and New Cat City

A big thanks to New York Shitty and New Cat City for kindly mentioning GEK on their blogs, I hope this will help get the word out about GEK. these are both great blogs that features a lot of interesting post on cats and pets in general and are a great fun to read.
I've also been getting some great advise and support from jimmylegs.com he's a proper Brooklyn cat rescuer and has helped numerous stray cats in Brooklyn find homes, please check out his blog, there's an interesting post of feral cats right now.

jimmylegs.com has a posting on GEK! Do read his blog if you have time, it's very funny and a great way to waste time at work, check out his post on guinea pigs, there are some crazy breeds out there. He has a few cats up for adoption too. They are older cats, and are great if u would like a calmer pet to keep you cosy in the winter.

I was over joyed at the prospect of GEK being litter trained yesterday link , only to come home and find that she missed the litter box.
Oh well, she tried, it was next to the litter box, she'll get it soon.

A little more about grey eye kitten and FIV

FIV positive cats can have, under good care a long and healthy life. It is most common among outdoor cats, around 8 to 10 % of cats that appear to be healthy carries it.
FIV CANNOT be transmitted to humans.
It is not ideal that GEK has been tested positive to FIV, however it is important to note that any test done under the age of 6 month is usually not very accurate and may cause false reading:
" Young kittens may have positive test results for 12 to 16 weeks after birth because of the passive transfer of FIV antibodies from the mother. Only a small percentage of these kittens who test positive are actually infected. A positive test result in an uninfected kitten is called a 'false positive.' Conversely, an infected kitten may have a falsely negative test if it has not yet had time to develop antibodies. Kittens tested at less than 6 months of age, regardless of the test result, should be retested after 6 months of age." link
It seems that there is a good chance that GEK might not be infected, since her results was a weak positive, maybe that was the antibodies left form her mother.
Since GEK has been tested positive , to be on the safe side, she has to stay isolated from the 2 adult cats that shares the same household. This is why GEK is only photographed it the bathroom. Our bathroom is now her temporary home.
We also need to be realistic that in case GEK's FIV infection is genuine, she needs to be in a single cat household, so those who already has a cat cannot adopt GEK as that might risk passing on FIV to their other cats. And if after 6 months she is retested and receive a negative result, then one can adopt another kitty to be her playmate.

Kitty's first vet visit

We found grey eye kitten on Sept 20th. On Sept 21st grey eye kitten went to her first visit to the vet.
Sept 21st is a Sunday, we contacted several vets and the only clinic that was open was Park Slope Veterinary Care. Although they were fully booked, after I explained about GEK being a newly rescue kitten, they kindly fit her in their busy schedule.
The vet and her assistant both fell in love with this adorable and friendly kitten, she was purring so hard that the vet had difficulty picking up her heart beat! They checked for fleas and found none, and gave her a general dewormer. They have also tested her for FIV and FeLV.
The FeLV test came out negative, however the FIV test shows a weak positive. The vet told me that most FIV positive cats live long and healthy lives, however GEK will need to be the only cat in a household. She told me to read up about it. I will post my findings on FIV on my next post.
UPDATE:
Just talked to the vet over the phone, stool sample came out negative for parasites and worms.

Grey eye kitten (GEK) has a visitor!

A friend of mine came over just to visit little GEK. GEK is a friendly kitten and she immediately warmed towards her visitor, purring like a little motor and rubbing her little head on the visitor's foot. Its safe to assume that whoever adopts this kitty will find no problem getting GEK's affections!

Litter box success! (warning: poop story ahead)

Since grey eye kitten is so tini, we have provided her with an aluminium baking pan as a temporary litter box. For the past few days GEK has a hit and miss record when it comes to the box. She might pee in the box but poop right next it ( luckily there's almost always some newspaper next to the box).
This morning I woke up expecting to do some poop cleaning , and lo and behold, there's 3 little poop place neatly in the litter box, not a single poop outside, perfection!

It's kitten season!

This is grey eye kitten, she was found at the corner of a street in the Kensington neighborhood of Brooklyn. She's very young, alone and covered in fleas, but that didn't stop her from being friendly, she was meowing and enjoyed being pet.
